At EPL we incorporate age-appropriate technology into both our classes and our children’s areas, in part, to help address disparities in home and school access to technology. This includes early literacy computers and iPads for younger children and computers, WiFi, gaming consoles, robots and Makerspace tools and equipment to support Science, Technology, Art and Math (STEAM) learning for older kids. We are committed to supporting multiple literacies for children, including early literacy and digital literacy.
All EPL locations have iPads loaded with early literacy apps that have been carefully selected by our staff. These apps are designed for children aged two and up. Some branches also have AWE stations, computers designed for young children. They are both located in accessible places in our children’s area. This provides opportunities for all families, including those who may not have access to technology at home, to gain digital skills and experience which are vital in today’s world.
We also recognize that not all digital media is created equal, and it can be challenging to determine which apps are best suited for young learners. Our iPads provide an opportunity for families to explore age-appropriate apps without having to purchase them first. Our staff carefully review and test each app before adding it to our collection so you can be confident that your child is accessing high-quality media. When selecting which apps to add to our iPads, our staff evaluate if it is well-designed, engaging, easy to use, and developmentally appropriate for children aged two to five. We also assess the app’s learning value for a diverse range of topics such as literacy and numeracy.
One of the easiest places to visit when you have a brand-new baby is the Library. It’s a great place to spend time, connect with the community, and get advice.
Not to mention, it’s completely FREE.
Here are just a few things you can do at any of our locations across Edmonton:
- Bring your stroller (please note that parking varies by branch).
- Find comfortable seating or hang out – in the children’s section, in the program room (before, during or after a class) or anywhere, really!
- Use your free library card to borrow children's material including books, music, audiobooks, movies, online interactive books and more.
- Breastfeed (ask staff about a private space to nurse or pump) and change your baby.
- Attend one of our drop-in early literacy classes – our motto is “go with the flow” so don’t worry if you need to leave early or if your baby falls asleep, cries or needs a feed or a diaper change.
- Drink a coffee and connect with other parents.
- Get book recommendations from staff and advice about reading with your baby.
- Check out the fish tank – there's one at every branch!
- Relax knowing you’re in a safe and welcoming space.
We love seeing babies at the Library (even if they’re crying!) so stop by and say hello!

Milner Library to browse through the collection of vinyl record jackets. Once you've found what you're looking for, simply bring them down to the main floor customer service desk. You can borrow up to five vinyl records at once. Staff will then fetch the vinyl records from the circulation room and bring them to you for checkout. Additionally, if you're keen on borrowing a turntable, you can do so directly from the main floor customer service desk.
Please allow 24-48 hours for returns to be reflected on your account. If they are still showing up on your account after that time, contact us.
We do not have set time limits on children’s technology because a child’s age and total daily screen time are also factors for parents and caregivers to consider. Instead, we encourage parents and caregivers to monitor and limit their child’s use of technology according to their child’s age and access to technology at home and in other contexts throughout the day. We also encourage our customers to share library resources. Please be mindful of other families waiting for their turn on the iPad or computer.
We’re always here to help so if the room you need isn’t available, contact us. Depending on the circumstances, there may be options we can explore. For example, your group might need a table and chairs, which could work in a quiet corner of the branch or our staff might be able to help you find other options in the neighbourhood.
We prioritize the delivery of library programs within our spaces, so frequent/recurring bookings may not always work. We ask returning customers to book a room no more than once per month.
Parents and caregivers are expected to be attentive to the children under their care, to reinforce safety messages communicated by EPL staff and encourage social behaviours in their children like sharing and turn taking.
Parents and caregivers can ask EPL staff for a quiet space or help distracting or calming down a distraught child.
The Shelley Milner Children’s Library is breastfeeding friendly.
Our goal is to create learning opportunities to help increase knowledge and grow interest in food literacy and nutrition, and to teach skills that would be transferable into a home kitchen environment. The system will automatically attempt to renew your borrowed item three days before the due date. If this renewal attempt is unsuccessful, you may try again manually any time before you return the item. For example, if your item is on hold for someone else, but due within three days, that hold could be filled with another copy, and your renewal may still go through manually.
Auto-renewal is an automatic process that applies to all customer accounts. It is not possible to opt out. However, customers who do not wish to keep an item and take advantage of the extra time can simply return the item when they are finished.
No, by default, all EPL customer accounts will auto-renew.
Customers will receive a “Pre-Overdue Courtesy” email notification for items that could not be renewed. Customers who do not receive email notifications will continue to receive their “One week overdue” notice for items that could not be auto-renewed.

Visit our The Palace Project App FAQ to learn more about using The Palace Project App with Libby by OverDrive titles.
OverDrive is the parent company of Libby and several other online resources including Kanopy. Initially, OverDrive’s eContent platform and app for ebooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and streaming videos were called “OverDrive.” In early 2023, the “OverDrive app” was discontinued, and replaced by the “Libby by Overdrive App”, which has since been shortened to just "Libby." Since then, OverDrive has been gradually phasing out its “OverDrive” branded econtent and references to these products. That is why you might see some links and econtent referred to as OverDrive, Libby by OverDrive, or simply Libby.
The legacy OverDrive site for Edmonton Public Library currently retains OverDrive branding.
There are a few ways for you to look for and suggest titles that are not in EPL’s Libby collection:
- You can submit a suggestion for purchase through our website on a Suggest an Item for Purchase page.
- If you search for a title, author or series and it returns no results in Libby, Libby will automatically expand into a “deep search” to display relevant titles that are not yet in the EPL collection but are available in the wider Libby catalogue. From there, you can apply a Notify Me smart tag to be notified if we add the title to our collection. Read more about the Notify Me tag by visiting the Libby Help website.
Please note: Adding a Notify Me smart tag does not guarantee purchase by EPL due to budgetary constraints.

On Oct. 8, 2024, a Libby security update is being applied for EPL customers.
- Libby checkouts and holds will no longer be impacted when a library card is lost.
- The update improves customer digital privacy.
EPL customers using Libby will be asked to re-enter their library card number and/or PIN the first time they place a hold or checkout a title once the update is applied.
- If the first prompt is missed or doesn't appear, try following Libby's verify card instructions with your library card number and PIN at hand.
- If you've forgotten your PIN, use the self-serve PIN reset option. Contact EPL if you need assistance with any other updates to your account.
Do you sync Overdrive titles to your Kobo eReader? Are titles not syncing as expected?
- The security update may require you to remove and re-add your library card from your Kobo. You may see a generic error message about a problem with your library card when trying to sync or borrow a title on your Kobo.
- To resolve this, tap on More (three lines icon), then Settings, then Overdrive. Remove the library card. Re-add your library card entering your library barcode and your PIN.
- Visual instructions can be found on Kobo's website.
- If you are interested in submitting your book to EPL’s collection, please visit the Collections FAQ at www.epl.ca/faq/collections/
- You can submit your writing to the Capital City Press at www.epl.ca/capital-city-press/collection/
- If you would like EPL to consider purchasing your ebook, please follow the guidelines provided on our Information for Creators page
Customers are welcome to use EPL’s book to print public domain and Creative Commons licensed works that permit format shifting (e.g., ebook to printed book) and distribution. To re-print or format shift a material that is in copyright, EPL requires written authorization communicated by the intellectual property holder to EPL directly.
No, staff cannot bind your books for you. As with other Makerspace services, the objective is to empower customers to learn about and directly operate the bookbinding machines rather than duplicate services in the community.
It is $0.05 per page plus $1.00 for the cover and glue to bind your book. For example, a 150-page book would cost $8.50.
As the service launches, books are limited to:
- Softcover using the Perfect Bind (glue) method
- Cream internal pages printed in Black & White; Full Color covers
- Minimum 50 pages, Maximum 700 pages
- 5.5” x 8.5” (statement size) paperbacks
If you are looking to make books with a custom size, a larger size, or a hardcover, please ask about our list of local and online alternatives.
No, currently we are limited to printing the book blocks (pages inside your book) in black and white only. Images must be 300 dpi.
Bookbinding at EPL is great for prototyping and small production (less than 5 books in a session). If you are looking to print and bind on a larger scale, ask about our list of local and online alternatives.
We are currently not accepting file submissions outside of participants attending the scheduled Bookbinding Files and/or Bookbinding Covers Workshop.
No, EPL’s service isn’t ideal for photobooks because we do not have specialty paper and we use a laser printer. The quality of the images will be negatively affected by these factors. If you are looking to make a photobook, check out our list of local and online alternatives.
Our new equipment includes:
- a creaser to crease your cover
- a perfect binder to glue your book block to your cover
- a guillotine for trimming your book to its finished size
Please note that this equipment is for the bookbinding service only.
EPL does not fix book spines. We recommend going to a service that specializes in fixing broken spines or remaking hardcovers.
No, in the past we did have a service, the Espresso Book Machine, but in early 2019 it was decommissioned permanently.
We have tested a variety of ticketing models at our events, including giving all tickets away for free. Unfortunately, this is not the best practice for us or our customers due to high no-show rates. We often had hundreds of customers missing out on tickets only to have a significant number of no-shows at the event. We have learned that a small cost holds our customers accountable to use their ticket while still making it a very affordable event.
The Capital City Team and branch locations will work to accommodate requests as best they can, but some flexibility may be required.
This initiative is for authors with published (self or traditional) works at this time. Preference will be given to those whose works are currently in the library collection. If you are interested in having your work in our collection, please visit https://www.epl.ca/capital-city-press/collection/ for more information.
The Capital City initiatives work to support current local authors and we do not have the ability to support any travel fees for authors coming from out of town.
Yes you may, though we ask that you organize this. EPL will not be able to handle any transactions.
This is an unpaid program.
We recommend an hour at most.
The author talk program will appear on our website as part of our regular program schedule.
Due to a technical limitation in our current library software, expiry dates cannot extend past December 31, 2037. Our software provider is working to fix this issue and new software version will be released before this expiry. For further questions, please contact us.
We will be emailing guests closer to the date with more event information and will follow up after the event looking for feedback and providing tax receipts. EPL will not pass your personal details onto any other organization.
Guests can visit us at www.epl.ca/gala , email give@epl.ca, or call us at 780-442-9110 for more information.

EPL cards do not require renewal.
Please note that library cards expire after three years of inactivity. If you haven’t used your card in a while, this is your chance to reactivate your card by borrowing from our millions of physical or digital items.
The automatic return chutes will no longer be available as maintaining this technology is a significant cost to EPL. Based on a pilot run since 2022, the removal of these chutes has not affected most customers, with a minimal impact experienced by those who need their items automatically discharged.
No, you do not need to check in material. Some branches may provide this as an option for those customers who wish to operate independently, however, speak to staff about alternatives if that is your preference.
If you would like items to be immediately removed from your account, please speak to branch staff who can provide you with options.
Any picture file will work. This includes JPEGs, PNGs as well as SVGs. What is most important is having a good quality image that meets the design requirements for a laser engraving or a cleaned up vector file that meets the criteria to be recognized by the laser cutter for cutting out a shape.
We are currently not accepting file submissions outside of participants attending the class scheduled times.
We are currently not accepting non-EPL provided materials.
This public space is intended for those who do not have access to commercial studio spaces, especially beginners, hobbyists, and early independent professionals. A good rule of thumb is that if you are charging someone else for your services in the space (i.e. for your work as a photographer), your project is not a good fit for the Studio Lab.
While we’re not interested in governing the content of your project, the Lab is still considered a public space. We ask that you do not include any powders, aerosols, glitter or realistic weapons in your props and that you remain clothed for the duration of your appointment.
Absolutely! Make sure each is aware of the guidelines for using the space.
Water in a spillproof container is all right, but we ask that customers not bring food or beverages into this space.
Yes! Please send your recommendations to events@epl.ca.

You will be able to view all the events you have registered for in the last two years only.
No, support for the controller is limited to the Gamerspace PCs and Xbox.
Yes! You can link the adaptive controller with a second controller to expand your button options or play with a copilot.
No, it can only be used at the Stanley A. Milner Library.
You are responsible for items borrowed on your card or family member’s cards for which you are a guarantor. Please report your card lost to the Library as soon as you are aware of it being lost and update your PIN/password for each card. See EPL’s Library Card FAQs for more information.
Let the library staff know if you have any digital checkouts or holds through Libby/Overdrive on your lost card when your card is replaced.
Though this feature is not available in the EPL App at this time, EPL customers can use the free Library Elf service to receive customized email and text message alerts for multiple library cards. Usual SMS carrier fees apply and it’s important to note that Library Elf messages do not replace key email messages you may already receive from EPL.
No – though multiple library cards can be added to the same EPL App, this does not create a linkage or relationship between cards in EPL’s systems. Additionally, cards must be added individually on each device where the EPL App is installed.
To remove access to your library card, change your password/PIN. Changing your password/PIN will also logout of your library account in any other library apps or web browsers where the information is currently remembered.
- You can reset your password/PIN online here: https://epl.bibliocommons.com/user/forgot by following the steps shown on the screen.
- You can login with your current password/PIN and update it under My Account and My Settings.
- You can contact any of our EPL branches for assistance.
If you are under 18, you must have your library card guarantor (a parent or legal guardian) update your library card password/PIN.
Full access to the library account is given when a card is added to the EPL App. The device owner can borrow, place holds and renew items on any card added through the multi-account feature. They can also update account settings on any card added through the multi-account feature, such as changing the password/PIN. Additionally, the device owner can see any custom shelves created with the card, access a card’s Borrowing History (if enabled), view past Suggestions for Purchase, and will be able to see reviews or ratings associated with the card.
Library account owners, including card guarantors (for those under 18 years of age), are responsible for items borrowed on each library card. Please see our Borrowing FAQs for more information.

EPL provides heat transfer vinyl at the Stanley A. Milner Library. To check on available colours, please contact the downtown branch..
The Stanley A. Milner Makerspace has Premium Plus Heat Transfer Vinyl, Holographic Heat Transfer Vinyl, and Glitter Flake Heat Transfer Vinyl.
Colours and availability may vary.
Cotton or cotton-poly blends work best. Your design will need to pressed onto a surface free of buttons, zippers or other non-fabric elements or it may not fully adhere and can damage the heat press. An example would be pressing a decal onto the back of a zipper sweater vs. the front. Some fabrics, such as 100% polyester or other poly-blends can work but can have some issues with colour change when exposed to high temperatures. Fabrics such as rayon that have a low melting temperature are not recommended.
The Stanley A. Milner Library has a Hotronix Auto Clam heat press with an 11"x15" platen. The heat press temperature range is 205-420 degrees Fahrenheit (Celsius is available).
- EPL provides Ultrafuse PLA plastic filament at 10 cents per gram (GST included).
- Current colours: Clear, Black, White, Red, Dark Blue, Silver and Magenta.
- PLA is a great prototyping material for beginners. Note that it is not recommended for applications requiring UV or water resistance and it is not food grade certified.
.STL and .OBJ file formats are preferred.
Prusa i3 MK3S(+) 3D Printer

Brother 3534DT Serger
The Brother 3534DT serger is perfect for finishing the edges of your fabric projects by creating an overlocking stitch. It can also optionally trim the fabric as you serge. Offering both a three- and four-thread configuration, the Brother serger uses a differential feed ratio of 0.7 - 2.0 for better stitch quality on a wide variety of fabrics. If you aren’t sure if your project needs a serger, ask a Makerspace staff! It is available at the Stanley A. Milner library.
A serger is a type of sewing machine that has a more specific purpose than regular sewing machines. They use an overlock stitch that regular sewing machines can not create.
Sergers are used for adding a professional finish to fabric edges. They can be used for creating small projects that don't require any sewing (such as a wash cloth) or finishing off more complex projects that were started with the sewing machine (such as a dress shirt). Use a serger to help you sew seams, trim off excess fabric, and finish raw fabric edges.
Sewing machines help to speed up sewing projects and provide regular even stitches in a variety of different forms (Zig-Zag stitches, Straight Stitches, Decorative stitches). Using sewing machines to sew clothing can help to make the project more efficient and provide a cleaner finish on clothes, as well as other fabric made items.
Alterations: A sewing machine can help with clothing alterations, they are excellent for hemming pants, and taking in seams on clothing.
Mending: A sewing machine can help assist with mending items, adding patches to jeans, fixing holes on garments as well as other fabric items such as curtains, pillows, and bedspreads.
The best way to help your child develop strong language and reading skills is to talk and read to them in your home language. This will also help them learn English! Choose books in your home language or dual language books, which have text in both the home language and English. Then read together and talk about what you read. Yes, this process is called raster engraving. Photographs will require processing and alteration in software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to transform into an image that will engrave well.
Yes. The required laser cutter certification training will cover how the process and job setup works at EPL as well as specific safety considerations.
Ready to Make is a safety check-in performed prior to each class or booking. Ready to Make means you are able to safely perform a task or activity or use a piece of equipment. It means being free from alcohol, drugs, controlled substances, and any medications that may impact your ability to safely participate in EPL classes, events, or activities in the specified spaces. You should be well-rested, healthy, and present in order to ensure you are fully able to focus on the task at hand.
EPL’s laser cutter is very safe to use. EPL employs a number of safeguards to ensure safety:
- The laser cutter includes a shielded safety glass top that is interlocked, interrupting laser operation immediately when lifted.
- The laser cutter is connected to an interlocked 3-stage air filtration system in addition to being operated under a fume hood.
EPL’s laser cutting service is primarily intended for learning and hobbyist applications, and is provided in a non-commercial capacity. EPL welcomes and encourages entrepreneurs who are just getting started to learn about and make use of EPL’s service for testing and prototyping. Volume production for ongoing customer fulfillment is beyond the scope of EPL’s service.

Innovator in Residence will be available during select drop-in office hours to provide mentorship, answer any questions, and guide you along your innovation journey.
If you want to learn more about entrepreneurship, have a question about your idea or course topic, or are seeking advice, we encourage you to stop by and meet our Innovator in Residence!
There are four courses within Innovation U: An Entrepreneurship Series. Within Innovation U, you will learn the following:
-
Idea Generation
- The best ideas come from problems we encounter in our day-to-day lives. This is an introduction to ideation—the start of solving any problem. Participants will learn tools and a proven framework to strengthen problem-solving skills and identify ideas to move forward with.
-
Creating a One Page Business Plan
- The Lean Canvas has been a favourite tool for entrepreneurs around the world for good reason. Designed to capture the important elements of your idea on one page, the Lean Canvas will help you test and validate your assumptions. This process will ultimately help you create solutions customers are looking for.
-
Design Thinking
- In this introduction to design thinking participants will learn a problem-solving approach that puts customers’ needs above all else. Participants will develop a toolkit that can be applied to their ideas, products, or solutions.
-
Perfecting THE Pitch
- An elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that entrepreneurs and innovators use to spark interest in their idea or business. In this final session, participants will learn the building blocks to create a memorable and effective pitch.
Stroller access parking to the Shelley Milner Children's branch is located on the P2 parking level of the Library parkade, near the Westin Hotel parking entrance (near the colourful bison mural.) Enter through the EPL stairway doors and stay right to follow the ramps to the main elevators. The elevator from the parkade is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Children's Library is located on the Main level.
Access can also be made through the main door of the Stanley A. Milner Library.
Weeding is the process of picking out all of the negative space once the vinyl has been cut. This can be time consuming if you have a lot of negative space. For example, choose a ladybug with 6 dots, not 100 so you only have to pull out the 6 dots. We will provide training on weeding at your first appointment.
A decal is a word we use for something that is like a sticker, but due to the design constraints of the vinyl cutter is not just a photo with a sticky back. Decals are often one or two colours, and simple in design.
Any picture file will work. This includes JPEGs, PNGs as well as SVGs. If you have an illustrator file, you will find most success exporting it as a PNG. What is most important is having a good quality image that meets the design requirements for a vinyl cut. If the image is small or blurry it will result in a rough edge which is difficult to cut and weed.
Each customer who would like to book an EPL studio must complete a studio certification. A staff member will certify you at the beginning of your first booking. They will explain the booking procedures, check-in/out procedures, studio guidelines, give you a tour of the studios and answer any questions you might have. This should take 10-15 minutes.
Our studios are very popular so we recommend booking ahead of time.

The walls, ceiling and floor are all made of white poplar, which is a significant tree to all Indigenous nations in the Edmonton-area. The doors of the space are on the south and east sides, with abundant windows to let in natural light. The windows of the space feature an art installation by Joi T. Arcand that showcases the name Elders Jo-Ann and Jerry Saddleback gave to the space. The space contains a dedicated air circulation system that can allow people to smudge everyday without shutting off the fire alarm system.
Everyone can learn, gather and reflect in PÎYÊSÎW WÂSKÂHIKAN. Though the space is built with Indigenous design and ceremony in mind, we recognize that many non-Indigenous EPL customers are very interested in participating in Indigenous and reconciliation-focused events and programming and we encourage this practice.
PÎYÊSÎW WÂSKÂHIKAN was specifically built for everyday smudging that does not require shutting down the fire alarm system. We welcome people to come to the space and learn about smudging and its importance to Indigenous peoples.

The Airthing screening device should be placed in rooms at the lowest level of the home where you and your family spend lots of time. Don't put it near a window, door or air vent, and keep it out of direct sunlight and water vapour, as these can all impact the readings.
In the summer months, people tend to leave windows and doors in their homes open, allowing radon to safely dissipate into the atmosphere. As a result, Radon Screening Kits will not be available to borrow between May 1 and Aug. 31 each year, as radon readings are less accurate during the summer.
We recommend testing for at least seven days but testing for the full loan period of three weeks will give a more accurate reading.
The Radon Screening Kits should give you an idea of the radon levels in your home. After this preliminary screening, you can decide if you want to continue monitoring your home by purchasing a longer-term radon testing kit.
See the guide book available via the QR code on the label for more details.
The Radon Screening Kits at EPL include an Airthing screening device, which allows you to get an initial reading of radon levels in your home. Please note the Radon Screening Kits are not a replacement for long-term radon testing kits that are available for purchase. Visit your local branch or check our catalogue by searching “Radon Screening Kit.”
Like other items in our collection, the Kits have a three-week loan period with the possibility of two renewals if there are no other customers waiting. Kits are available to borrow between Sept. 1 and April 30 each year.
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in the ground. It can build up in your home undetected, which is problematic as exposure to radon gas is the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. Recent research from the University of Calgary indicates that one in six homes in western Canada have high radon levels.
Radon screening is usually recommended for people who live in ground-level contact homes, including single-family dwellings, duplexes, townhouses and basement suites. However, you can use the Radon Screening Kit in any home, including apartment buildings, as radon can sometimes be found in non-ground level homes due to poor ventilation.
EPL already has a number of book lists for kids 0-5. View our Early Literacy page to get reading recommendations or submit this form to get personal picks delivered straight to your inbox. Got a great idea for a list? Talk to staff the next time you're in the branch.
Of course! While the content delivered will be for the class’ target age group, we welcome sibling participation.
Unless otherwise stated, parents are required to attend with their child. Adult participation is part of what makes our classes so fun and helpful for supporting early literacy beyond the hours of the library.
Many small children can’t sit still! Kids are welcome to experience classes in whatever way they wish—even though they are moving around, they are still listening and learning. Storytime is a great way to practice a circle-time experience before school starts.
We often have babies snoozing throughout storytime! Coming to classes still gives you a chance to interact with other caregivers and to learn songs and rhymes that you can share with your baby later at home.
Most early literacy classes are designed for one-on-one interactions between adults and children, so talk to your branch about finding options for larger groups, including a special storytime or tour of the library.
Baby Laptime is a quieter, gentler class with content specifically targeted for 0-12 months. In this 30 minute class, we share rhymes you can use in your daily life, like bath and diaper changing rhymes, and give babies a chance to explore the space.
Sing, Sign, Laugh and Learn is a 45 minute class for children 0-36 months. Classes are inclusive and geared to a range of abilities and developmental stages, from infants learning to recognize sounds to walking and running toddlers. Offered in collaboration with the Edmonton Early Intervention Program, SSLL gives parents/caregivers a chance to interact one-on-one with their children through repetition, visual strategies like scarves and shakers and movement.
The library is designed to support the needs of all customers, so there are quiet places available to those who need it. We love to see babies and children in our spaces, so don't be shy to bring your young ones!
We're always happy to see children engage with books, even if it means taking them off the shelves! As library staff, it's our job to return books to their proper place so focus on what's important: creating a positive experience with your child at the library.
Absolutely! Every branch has bathrooms with change tables to make it easy to take care of your baby's needs.
Absolutely! EPL is a breastfeeding-friendly place and we recognize that children need access to food in order to stay regulated and happy. You can even ask staff to help you find a private space to nurse or pump.
Which libraries you search to find an item you’d like to borrow through Interlibrary Loans depends largely on what you’re looking to borrow. The following libraries accessible via Interlibrary Loans offer varying collections:
- Relais D2D: for public and select academic library resources in Alberta.
- ME Libraries: for public library resources across Alberta.
- NEOS: for academic, government and special library resources in Alberta (includes on-site access to databases).
If you’re not an EPL customer, but you have a valid card from another library in Alberta, and are in good standing, you may also be eligible to borrow from EPL’s collection via a TAL Card or ME Libraries.
We (or future versions of us) will open the capsule in exactly 100 years. Tell your grand-kids to mark their calendars for February 14, 2119!
The time capsule will be hidden deep within the walls of our renovated Stanley A. Milner Library, so your love story is a complete secret for the next 100 years! Don't worry though—we'll display a plaque indicating where the time capsule is within the building so you can visit when you're there.
EPL has many volunteer programs. Please visit our Volunteer page for information on our current volunteer opportunities.

The Edmonton Public Library gratefully accepts donations of books and other library materials from the general public. All donated material goes to our Book Sales. Book Sales also provide a new home for material that has been weeded from our branch collections. Weeding materials that no longer circulate as they once did allows space for newer, more appealing and current materials, and is a critical element in maintaining useful and contemporary collections at EPL.
The funds generated from the sale of donated and weeded materials at our Book Sales are used to enhance EPL collections and services.
There are a number of variables taken into consideration when planning our Sales for the year:
- Availability of the program rooms in our Branches.
- Availability of event resources and adequate stock of Sale materials.
- Consideration of conflict or overlap with other events in the City.
In an effort to create a barrier-free experience, if you have a disability or impairment that will impact your participation in our event please email us at events@epl.ca at least one week ahead of time to allow us to find solutions to best support you.

When a hold in your account says that it is "in transit," this means that a copy of the item has been assigned to fill your hold. The item is now (or soon will be) on its way to your pickup location and this is signified by the truck icon in red.
When the item has arrived at your pickup location and is ready to be picked up, the truck will disappear and green check mark will appear.
The fee for a lost or damaged ILL item is $90.
If you have lost or damaged an ILL item, please contact the ILL Department at our email address ILL@epl.ca or call 780-496-7027.
This summer, there are two ways to track your reading hours:
- On paper: Pick up a reading log at your nearest EPL branch. A reading log helps you keep track of the hours you've read over the summer. Fill out your reading log for every six hours that you read, and bring it back to your nearest EPL location to enter the grand prize draw.
- Online*: Can't come in to an EPL location? No problem - simply submit your hours at tdsummerreadingclub.ca. For every six hours you read, you'll get one entry into the grand prize draw.
*Please note: online entries are not eligible for a button prize.

Late 2018.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2017.
LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health, such as:
- Sustainable site development
- Water savings
- Energy efficiency
- Materials selection
- Indoor environmental quality
Since 2010, the Capilano branch has been affected by numerous elevator outages as well as a significant mall renovations. As the construction on Capilano Mall is nearing completion, the new stores and access to public transit, the Capilano branch has seen a 23% increase in visits from 2014 to 2015 despite significant challenges accessing the second floor space.
A new branch will provide consistent and easier access to library services for Capilano community members and we anticipate that library use will increase even more once the new more accessible branch is open. Our estimates show that new branch is expected to serve approximately 167,158 visitors annually, up from 139,298 today.
Typically the only removal of existing curb and gutter will be to provide curb crossings for library access. The budget does not allow for funds to replace this type of infrastructure unless absolutely necessary. The following is a preliminary list of recommended improvements:
- New boulevard walk on the east side of 67 Street from 101 Avenue to 98 Avenue
- Improvements to the transit stop on 101 Avenue
Yes. To help with traffic flow, a one-way street northbound on 67 Street between 99 and 101 Avenue will be converted to a two-way operation. This will take place prior to the start of construction, which is scheduled for early 2017.
The entrance to the new library is less than a block away from nearby bus stops. Users of the existing Capilano library walk about 400 feet from the bus stop to the mall entrance; users of the new library will walk about 550 feet and will now have ground floor access, access making it easier for those with young children, strollers and mobility issues to access the building.
Based on benchmarking data, it was determined that the library will need approximately 36 parking spaces to accommodate customers who drive.
The plan for the library is bigger than the footprint of the old Fire Hall. Because of the space required to build the new branch, using the Fire Hall site would have resulted in additional challenges including a very narrow parking lot that would have been difficult to access. The current location balances a number of considerations, including surrounding buildings, parking lot access, and the nearby ravine.
The site was chosen because of its proximity to the ravine and the connections that it offers to the wider river valley system. Additionally a review of the area showed very little land in the neighborhood for the construction of new buildings.
No. In fact research shows the opposite. A study from the University of Maine shows that homes located within one quarter of a mile of a library were worth 7.7% more than comparable homes located further away from libraries.
No, the land where the Capilano Library is planned has not been rezoned. This area is zoned Metropolitan Recreation Zone (A) and libraries are a discretionary use under this zone.
The Makerspace will have items like a 3D printer and computers with specialized software enabling customers to create. As technology changes new tools and equipment will be added.
The new program room will be approximately 800 square feet which is big enough for 70 people including adjacent outdoor space for events. The current program room can only seat up to 42 people.
Along with our great collections, services, and programs, the plans for the new library include ground level access, a larger community programming room, a 24 hour material return slot, quiet study space, and a Makerspace.
The new branch will be approximately 10,000 square feet which is similar in size to the current location.
Space is limited at our locations. The priority of our display space is for Library materials. Other materials are accommodated based on alignment to EPL services, community interest and available space.
To learn more about what we accept, and how to submit check out the Business at EPL page.

The five practices support early literacy. Parents are a child's first and best teacher; by modeling and communicating these simple and powerful practices, parents and caregivers can build early literacy skills into everyday activities:
Talking with children helps them learn oral language, one of the most critical early literacy skills. The experience of self-expression also stimulates brain development, which underlies all learning.
Singing, which also includes rhyming, increases children's awareness of and sensitivity to the sounds in words. This helps prepare children to decode print (written language).
Writing and reading go together. Writing helps children learn that letters and words stand for sounds and that print has meaning.
Reading together, or shared reading, remains the single most effective way to help children become proficient readers.
Playing is one of the primary ways young children learn about the world. General knowledge is an important literacy skill that helps children understand books and stories once they begin to read.
Early literacy is important:
- The early years are essential for literacy: reading can come at any age, but language skills cannot. (Diane McGuinness, Growing a Reader from Birth)
- Did you know that your baby has been listening to your voice since before he or she was born? Babies are born prepared to learn!
- By age 4, the brain is 90% of its adult size. (Dr. Bruce Perry, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog)
- Early Literacy is not expensive; babies learn best when spending time with a loving caregiver. (Jane Cobb, What’ll I Do With the Baby-o?)
- Early Literacy lasts a lifetime. Knowledge of alphabet letters at entry into kindergarten is a strong predictor of reading ability in 10th grade.
- Children can’t learn to talk unless adults talk to them. (Mem Fox, Reading Magic). Talk all the time!
EPL is lucky to get a lot of volunteer applications. Unfortunately, not all who apply can be placed in a role. Only applications that qualify for an interview will be contacted at the time of a vacancy.
All applications that have not been placed in volunteer roles are archived six months from their submission date and eventually deleted.
Please be as detailed and specific as you can as to why you’d like to volunteer, what you’ll get out of volunteering and the skills and experience you’ll bring to the role(s) you’re applying for.
EPL receives a high volume of applications. Submit an application that can speak in detail about your interest in volunteering at EPL.
It’s important to know why you personally want to volunteer. Know what kind of work you’re looking to do, what you wish to get out of the volunteer experience, how long you wish to commit to a volunteer role and how quickly you want to start volunteering.
Please read the volunteer position description you are looking to apply to carefully to ensure it matches what you’re interested in doing and that your availability aligns with time requirements.

Elder in Residence
Elders can help with connecting you to culture and ceremony, but in most cases they are not counsellors. They are integral community members that can guide you in your cultural learning and connect you to the larger community.
Protocol is a traditional set of rules or etiquette that demonstrates respect for the Elder. When seeking knowledge from an Elder, learners present the Elder with an offering of tobacco or another gift and make their request.
Kokum Lorette will accept protocol such as tobacco, however, if someone cannot provide it, they will not be turned away.
Tobacco, one cigarette is good, a meter of Print (solid colour broadcloth) or other culturally specific items that you were taught.

Yes, you can donate in memory or honour of a loved one on our online form here. All donations in memory or in honour will be included in our annual report.
While EPL core operations are funded through the City of Edmonton, some emerging programs and initiatives are funded through donations. EPL’s donors' generosity has helped support past projects such as the Welcome Baby program, epl2go literacy vans, and the revitalization of the Stanley A. Milner Library.
EPL is a responsible and accountable steward of public funds. With your donation, we hope to raise $1,242,000 by the end of 2025 with fundraising costs of 30%.
Donations from this year’s campaigns will be used to support EPL’s priority projects which will provide learning and literacy resources to help meet our community’s growing and diverse needs. The Edmonton Public Library is incorporated in Edmonton, Alberta and our central branch is located at 7 Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton AB T5J 2V4. Please reach out to our Fund Development team at 587-588-9034 or give@epl.ca for more information.
You can become a monthly donor here.
*Please note that due to fraud prevention protocols and recommendations, EPL only can accept monthly donations of $5 and greater.
We recognize donors in a few different ways:
- Donations of $250 or more may be recognized in our annual report or other publications.
Charging a fee for access is against the basic principles and philosophy of a public library – free and open access to information, ideas, and resources for all people. By removing late fees EPL customers can now enjoy access to our collection’s barrier-free.
Cook up a Story Summer Camp is EPL's free summer camp for children aged 9-12 from socially vulnerable families, designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love for literacy. The camp provides opportunities to explore the world of storytelling—whether through cooking, writing, or digital media—while promoting healthy eating and teamwork. Children from low-income families can attend at no cost, ensuring access to enriching summer experiences that can shape their futures.
Each week during July and August, we welcome 25 campers aged 9-12 for a full-day camp experience, running Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. The camp combines literacy, creativity, and hands-on activities like cooking, storytelling, digital literacy, crafting, and gaming. Nutritious lunches and snacks are provided daily to fuel campers as they explore, learn, and create. Campers enjoy a new discovery each day, fostering a love of learning through play.

Smart Chute Decommissioning May 2024
EPL does not charge overdue fees for items returned late.
Please allow 24-48 hours for returns to be reflected on your account. If they are still showing up on your account after that time, contact us.

Vinyl Record Collection
There are 500+ albums in the vinyl record collection, including 100 albums from local Edmonton and Calgary artists.
If you're interested in checking out vinyl records or turntables, here's how you can do it: Head up to the second floor of Stanley A.
You can borrow a turntable for up to 21 days. Renewals are not allowed.
You can borrow up to five vinyl records and one turntable at a time for 21 days; no renewals are allowed.
Vinyl records are available for borrowing exclusively at Stanley A. Milner Library. While they can be returned to any EPL branch, we kindly encourage you to return them to Stanley A. Milner whenever possible.
Vinyl is a medium used to store music, made with PVC resin and heat press plates to press grooves into the material. For more detailed information, visit https://vinyliq.com/how-are-vinyl-records-made/
Vinyl record grooves are “read” by a turntables’ arm needle and the vibrations from the needle are then transferred to a speaker for listening. Traditionally, you could listen to a vinyl record with analog (non-electric) hand cranked turntables.
-

Borrowing
You can borrow the following items up to three weeks: Books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, video games and interlibrary loans.
You can borrow Hits-to-Go items for one week.
Please return items on time so we can share them with others.
Renewing is easy:
- Online– Log in at EPL.ca and renew your materials in “My account” under “My EPL.”
- By phone– Grab a pen, paper, your borrowed materials, and call 496.7047 and follow the instructions.
- At a branch– Use one of the public catalogue terminals or speak to a staff member.
If a library item is past 8 days overdue, a notice will be mailed or emailed to you. If a non-Hits to Go item has not been returned after 21 days, or, if a Hits To Go item has not been returned after 14 days, you will be billed for the replacement cost.
If your fines reach a total of $10 or more or if you have 40 items or more checked out or 10 items overdue, you will not be able to borrow any more items, place holds or access eBooks, eAudiobooks or any other digital content until your account is in good standing.
Yes it does! All existing late fees are forgiven. However, if you have outstanding replacement fees for item(s) you have not returned, these need to still be paid.
EPL is committed to minimizing wait times, we purchase additional copies of titles to meet customer demand, based on a copy to holds ratio. We track the number of holds we have on every title and make sure that customers are not negatively impacted. If some items are being kept longer than the 3 weeks, our copy to holds ratio would dictate more copies need to be purchased.
A replacement fee is the cost of an item not returned.
Customers will be billed the replacement cost of a non-Hits To Go item 21 days after the due date and 14 days after the due date of a Hits To Go item, if it has not been returned. At this point it is considered a lost item.
Due to a technical limitation in our current library software, expiry dates cannot extend past December 31, 2037. Our software provider is working to fix this issue and new software version will be released before this expiry. For further questions, please contact us.
EPL cards do not require renewal.
Please note that library cards expire after three years of inactivity. If you haven’t used your card in a while, this is your chance to reactivate your card by borrowing from our millions of physical or digital items.

Android: Scroll past the New at the Library section on the home screen and tap the “View on order titles” buttons. You can filter by format, audience, and more.

Android: When viewing a title’s details in the app, tap on the blue Availability by location link above the green Place hold button to view a list of branches with available copies.
When you set preferred locations, those preferred locations with available copies of the title will be shown first.

iPhone and Android: When you view a title, community star ratings are shown below the cover image, title, and author information. Reviews from individual community members across BiblioCommons libraries are shown below the title’s description and reviews from critics.
Yes – tap on settings (gear icon) in the top right corner of the home screen. Open the section labelled “customize homescreen.” You can choose which content carousels (New the Library, For Later, Events, etc.) are shown and in which order they appear.

Interlibrary Loans
We want to build a balanced collection to serve all of Edmonton. If you’re interested in a title that’s not in the EPL catalogue, let us know and we’ll consider your request. Suggestions are evaluated according to our Collection Development Policy.
You can request up to five items per month through our online catalogue. Track the progress of your suggestion within the Suggest a Purchase pages (after logging in). Before making your suggestion, check our catalogue to make sure we don't already carry it.
Suggest a new item (library card and PIN required)
Interlibrary Loans (ILL) are the way library materials are made available from one library system to another. If Edmonton Public Library doesn’t own an item or format that you need, our Interlibrary Loan Department will try to get a copy sent from another library system within Alberta or Canada.
Interlibrary loans are lent on the basis of immediate availability. This means that the lending library determines if an item is available to lend at the time the ILL request comes in. EPL ILL requests are not put into the hold list for any item from an outside library system. You can re-request an item a few weeks after being notified that the item was in use by local customers.
Interlibrary Loans are a free service offered to EPL members in good standing. Simply submit your ILL request using Relais D2D or the Interlibrary Loan Request Form. Please be sure the information is specific and accurate. If you are not certain of the title, please ask EPL staff to assist you with the ILL requesting process. Please do not submit more than one request at the same time for an item.
When your Interlibrary Loan arrives at your branch, you will be notified by our automated telephone system unless you have email notification on file. We will telephone you if the materials are for in-library use only.
An EPL borrower who has more than 50 items on hold or fees over $10.00 will not be able to receive their ILL requests.
ME Libraries memberships and The Alberta Library (TAL) memberships are not eligible to use EPL’s ILL service.
Each ILL item is identified by a book band on the front or back cover. You can check an ILL item out with your regular library items at a self-check-out machine. If your item doesn’t scan or appear on your check-out list, please see EPL branch staff at Customer Service.
Please keep the ILL book band on the item and drop it off at any EPL branch or EPL item return drop. Your ILL item will check-in just like a regular EPL item.
A maximum of 1 renewal is permitted.
If an ILL book band has a yellow sticker that says No RENEWAL on this item, it means that renewals are not possible.
Renewals on ILL items depend on the lending library’s policy. (The green check mark just means that we can ask for a renewal, it doesn’t mean we’ll get one).
Please contact EPL’s ILL Department for ALL renewal requests one week before your item is due, as EPL Branch staff are not able to renew ILL materials. EPL cannot renew or extend the due date without asking the owning library’s permission. Once we hear back from the lending library, we will let you know whether you can keep the item for an additional 3 weeks.
Please contact the ILL Department at our email address ILL@epl.ca or call 780-496-7027.
- Books
- CDs (Alberta libraries only)
- DVDs and Blu-rays (Alberta libraries only)
- Videogames (Alberta libraries only)
- Photocopies of specific magazine articles or newspaper articles
- Photocopies of specific pages/sections from city directories (phone books, Henderson’s Directories, etc.)
- Microfilms/Microfiche (may only be viewed at the Stanley A. Milner Library or the Whitemud Crossing Branch)
There is no way to control the order in which ILL items arrive. As we are one of the busiest ILL departments in all of Canada, we need your help to be as efficient and economical as possible with our Interlibrary Loan requests.
So when requesting multiple seasons or volumes of a series, please consider submitting requests for subsequent volumes or series when you see the current season/volume has shipped. Check My Account on Relais D2D for status updates.
It can take 3-6 weeks* from the date of your request. If you haven’t seen any change in the status of your request for 3-4 weeks, contact the EPL ILL Department to inquire about your ILL request. There are various factors that can impact the amount time that it can take to receive your ILL.
It is not possible to suspend ILL requests if you are going to be away, as you can with holds on EPL material. Please contact ill@epl.ca if you’ve placed a request and are going to be unavailable to pick it up for any length of time. We’re happy to cancel and then replace a request upon your return.
*You can potentially access items from the metro Edmonton area libraries faster by using a ME Libraries membership. This type of transaction is faster because you cut out the middle-men – namely the ILL departments of the libraries involved.
For more information, please speak to a customer service representative at one of our Edmonton Public Library locations.
If you placed your hold through Relais, you can cancel requests on the My Accounts page. Click on the request you would like to cancel, and then click “Cancel” in the bottom right corner.
To change the pick up location for your ILL requests, please contact the ILL Department at our email address ILL@epl.ca or call 780-496-7027.
We ask that you limit your requests to 5 items at one time.
EPL’s ILL department will send you an email or a letter if we are unable to get the item you requested. The reasons could include:
- Restricted circulation: such as reference material, special collection or electronic format (i.e. educational material, technical manuals, historical documents).
- The item is in use by local customers.
- The item was published too recently. Often libraries restrict new items to keep them available for their own customers.
- The item is missing.
- We could not find any library in Canada that owns the item.
The loan period is 3 weeks. The lending library may restrict the material to in-library use only. Interlibrary Loans can occasionally be renewed, depending on the lending library’s policy. See Can I renew my Interlibrary loan item? FAQ information.
- Materials that are already in the EPL collection (including items on order, Blu-ray versions of DVDs EPL already owns, or non-circulating items)
- AV materials outside of Alberta
- Individual or bound issues of magazines
- Electronic resources
The fee for a lost or damaged ILL item is $90.
If you have lost or damaged an ILL item, please contact the ILL Department at our email address ILL@epl.ca or call 780-496-7027.

Kids

Speaker Series
We have tested a variety of ticketing models at our events, including giving all tickets away for free. Unfortunately, this is not the best practice for us or our customers due to high no-show rates. We often had hundreds of customers missing out on tickets only to have a significant number of no-shows at the event. We have learned that a small cost holds our customers accountable to use their ticket while still making it a very affordable event.
You can transfer your ticket to a friend or family member if you can't attend an event. EPL does not offer refunds for tickets purchased to Forward Thinking Speaker Series events.
In an effort to create a barrier-free experience, if you have a disability or impairment that will impact your participation in our event please email us at events@epl.ca at least one week ahead of time to allow us to find solutions to best support you.
The General Admission season pass is $125 and gives you a tickets to all four Forward Thinking Speaker Series events in 2025.
In order to ensure the best experience for all customers, we do not allow latecomers into Speaker Series events after 7:10 p.m. For An Evening with David Sedaris, doors will be closed after 6:10 p.m. Please be in your seats before this time.
A nominal admission price supports EPL fundraising activities and helps ensure attendance to our events. We also want to ensure EPL’s Forward Thinking Speaker Series events are inclusive. If the ticket price is a barrier, please contact events@epl.ca.
It's recommended that you purchase any tickets ahead of time online; however, depending on the venue you may be able to purchase tickets at the door.
Kindness: The Stars that Light Our Way with Jesse Thistle tickets can be purchased through the Horowitz Theatre starting on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
A Conversation with Peter Mansbridge tickets will be available through the Horowitz Theatre starting on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

Each seat costs $2,020. When all of the seats sell out, the campaign will have raised about $500,000 to support the Stanley A. Milner Library Revitalization.

Yes! Seat selection will take place in 2019 with a first-committed, first-seated approach. This means that the sooner you commit to your gift, the earlier you'll get to select your seat!
This campaign will be complimentary to all pre-existing fundraising campaigns and initiatives, and will stand alone as a unique campaign to support he Stanley A. Milner Library Revitalization. Donors who have given $500 or more (cumulative) to the Stanley A. Milner Revitalization will be recognized on the campaign display in the newly renovated branch. If donors also want a seat in the Theatre, they will have to make the additional purchase of $2,020.

The group will have to agree on recognition, and charitable receipts will be issued to individual donors based on documentation provided by the group coordinator. For information about coordinating a group donation, please contact give@epl.ca.

Visiting the Library
Space is limited at our locations. The priority of our display space is for Library materials. Other materials are accommodated based on alignment to EPL services, community interest and available space.
To learn more about what we accept, and how to submit check out the Business at EPL page.
A complete list of the organizations that EPL distributes information for is available here.
EPL does not distribute materials for fundraising events or for-profit organizations. -
Volunteer
Many of our volunteer roles require a long-term commitment. Volunteers stay in their roles for a long period of time. This results in low volunteer turn over and vacancies.
Reading Buddies is the only volunteer program available at EPL for teens (ages 13-17).
The Reading Buddies program is available at the following branches:
- Calder
- Castle Downs
- Clareview
- Idywylde (French)
- Lois Hole
- Londonderry
- Meadows
- Riverbend
- Whitemud Crossing
Recruitment takes place two months before a Reading Buddies program starts and positions fill quickly. Program start dates vary by location and not all branches offer the program year round. Check the volunteer current opportunities page regularly for upcoming Reading Buddies sessions.
No, you can only submit an application when there is an opportunity available on the current volunteer opportunities page.

Welcome Baby
Visit an EPL location to get your baby a free library card. Children under 36 months also receive a second free board book (also available in French) and an illustrated Welcome Baby Songs and Rhymes booklet (digital versions available in five world languages).
Yes, EPL's popular Welcome Baby song and rhyme booklet is available electronically in five world languages: Chinese, French, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese.
Absolutely! EPL is a breastfeeding-friendly place and we recognize that children need access to food in order to stay regulated and happy. You can even ask staff to help you find a private space to nurse or pump.

Writer In Residence
Not at all. Published, not yet published or not interested in being published, it doesn't matter. All writers are welcome.
Within the bounds of writing and publishing we can talk about just about anything. Have you written a book and are unsure what to do next? Let's talk about it. Working on a short story and you've written yourself into a corner you don't know how to get out of? Maybe I can help! The cadence is off on your latest poem, and you want some fresh eyes on it? I'm happy to take a look. Or, if you just have questions about the industry that you'd like answered, I can do that too.
Of course! I will provide feedback on up to 3,000 words of your prose or 3 poems per appointment. After you have booked an appointment with me, please send your writing as a Word-compatible email attachment to rhonda.parrish@epl.ca
I take meetings by appointment only. I am open to virtual appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in-person appointments in the Writer in Residence office in the Stanley A. Milner library at least one Thursday a month. You can check my availability and book and appointment here.
If you mean, can I provide you information about best practices and following guidelines or read your work/query letter/synopsis/whatever and provide feedback, then yes. If you mean, can I introduce you to your dream editor/agent/publisher, then no.
