The Edmonton Public Library will temporarily close its branches on Thursday, March 14.

Civic Service Union (CSU) 52 library staff on strike starting Thursday, March 14 at 11 a.m.

For immediate release:

EDMONTON, AB, March 11, 2024 — The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) unionized staff will go on strike effective Thursday, March 14 at 11 a.m.

On March 11, 2024 Edmonton Public Library received 72-hours' notice from Civic Service Union (CSU) 52 of their intention to initiate a strike by all unionized employees at EPL.

Regrettably, EPL must temporarily close all EPL locations as of March 14 at 11 a.m. until further notice. This closure requires the cancellation of EPL’s programs, classes, events and services over the next week, with more cancellations possible as the situation evolves.

“It is with a heavy heart that I recognize the disruption this will cause for our staff and the customers we serve. We understand that for many individuals, EPL is a vital hub for learning and connecting,” said Pilar Martinez, CEO of the Edmonton Public Library.

During this temporary closure, customers can continue to access EPL’s digital resources, browse EPL.ca, and view the online catalogue of EPL’s collection.

If customers have library materials on loan, we ask that they keep these materials at home until the Library reopens. All due dates are extended and no late fees will be charged. Customers’ holds will be available once EPL reopens.

EPL remains committed to reaching an agreement that is fair for our staff, while recognizing the financial challenges faced by City Council, our primary funder.

“We care deeply about our employees and value their efforts.” said Martinez, “We are eager to reach a fair resolution so we can reopen our doors as soon as possible.”

Edmontonians can access up to date information about this labour disruption at epl.ca.
