Sing It, Edmonton! EPL Releases Made-in-Edmonton Album for Little Learners

Featuring 20 Original Songs by Local Musicians

EDMONTON, AB — The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is thrilled to launch Sing It, Edmonton: Songs from the Neighbourhood—a joyful new album created especially for babies, young children, and their families.

Music is a powerful tool for early literacy. Long before children read their first book, they absorb language through sound, rhythm, and play. Singing helps build vocabulary, spark curiosity, strengthen connections, and lay the foundation for lifelong learning.

This new compilation features 20 original songs by 25 talented musicians, songwriters, and performers from across the Capital Region, Treaty 6 Territory, and the Métis Nation of Alberta. From bundling up on a chilly morning to exploring the river valley or visiting their local library, each track celebrates the everyday moments that shape a child’s world.

The album is part of EPL’s Welcome Baby program, which introduces families to the importance of early literacy from birth. While music has always played a role in the program, this marks the first time EPL has collaborated with local artists to produce a professionally recorded, “made-in-Edmonton” album—captured in the Stanley A. Milner Library’s state-of-the-art Makerspace recording studios.

Sparking a love of reading and a passion for lifelong learning is a cornerstone of EPL’s vision, and the Library is continually working to create new and meaningful ways to nurture literacy in Edmonton’s youngest citizens. From programs like Ready. Set. READ!, to the more than 11,000 Welcome Baby kits delivered to NICU units across the city in 2024 alone, EPL is making great strides in helping every child get the best possible start.

“Literacy doesn’t begin with letters,” says Pilar Martinez, CEO of EPL. “Ninety per cent of a child’s brain develops before the age of five. Engaging with music early on helps children build essential skills and sets them up for future success in school—and in life. We’re incredibly proud to share this album as a gift to families, caregivers, and most importantly, our youngest community members.”

EPL welcomed submissions from both emerging and established artists—including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit musicians—and proudly prioritized representation from a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences. A dedicated jury from EPL’s Early Literacy and Family Services team curated the final track list for its musical quality, educational value, and connection to Edmonton’s communities.

Whether you're dancing in the living room, singing in the car, or winding down before bed, this album invites children and their grown-ups to experience the magic of early literacy—together.
