EDMONTON, AB, December 15, 2025 — After more than a decade as Chief Executive Officer and over 25 years with Edmonton Public Library (EPL), CEO Pilar Martinez has announced plans to step down in August 2026.
“It has been the honour of my life to serve as CEO and to work alongside such an exceptional team and community,” said Martinez. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to help shape EPL’s mission and elevate its impact, and I look forward to supporting a thoughtful transition in the months ahead.”
During Martinez’s tenure, EPL strengthened its role as critical public infrastructure, expanding access, fostering connection, and driving innovation. Early in her leadership, she helped define EPL’s mission and brand, embedding We Share! as a cornerstone of its identity. She also championed early literacy and introduced the community-led service framework. Martinez was instrumental in increasing access by eliminating fines, supporting free memberships, and leading innovative initiatives such as storefront branches, literacy vans, and expanded access to creative technology and digital content, ensuring more people could create, read, listen and learn.
Under her leadership, EPL revitalized the Stanley A. Milner Library, and she guided 14 new branch openings and six renovations and expansions, creating welcoming spaces across the city. Her enduring passion for intellectual freedom reinforced EPL’s commitment to open access and to providing spaces where everyone feels welcome.
“Pilar’s leadership has strengthened EPL’s reputation as one of the most innovative and community-focused library systems in North America,” said Shawna Vogel, Chair of the EPL Board of Trustees. “Her vision and dedication have left an indelible mark on our city and our library system. Under Pilar’s leadership, EPL has embraced cutting edge technology and introduced innovative services across our branches, ensuring that every Edmontonian, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Pilar’s commitment to community-led service, service excellence, and intellectual freedom will continue to inspire EPL for years to come.”
“As a councillor, and now as mayor, I’ve seen first-hand how EPL enriches the lives of Edmontonians. Under Pilar’s leadership, EPL lowered barriers and widened opportunity with fine-free borrowing, increasing access, and programs and resources that turned everyday library moments into pathways to possibility. On behalf of City Council, I thank Pilar for her years of service and look forward to EPL’s continued impact,” said Andrew Knack, Mayor of Edmonton.
Martinez will work closely with the EPL Board to ensure a smooth transition and remains committed to supporting EPL through this process.
“I’m excited for what’s ahead, both for EPL and for me,” Martinez added. “Our talented team and strong foundation will ensure EPL continues to thrive and lead with imagination and heart.”
