Edmonton Public Library Update #9: COVID-19 Response

Dear Library Customer,

On Monday, March 1, the Province announced that public libraries were moved from Step 3 to Step 2 of the Province’s Path Forward roadmap. As a result, EPL is thrilled to welcome you back to the library effective Monday, March 15.

The decision to advance public libraries to Step 2 was a direct result of the collaborative advocacy done in partnership with the Calgary Public Library and other public libraries demonstrating the vital role libraries play in the communities we serve. Many Edmontonians rely on EPL for reading materials, computer access, job search resources, and access to social assistance, immigration services, mental health resources and more. The availability of essential social supports and resources are more urgent than ever due to the pandemic. We are thankful to the Government of Alberta for recognizing the valuable work libraries do in serving our communities.

Effective Monday, March 15, EPL’s reopening plan includes:

  • Browsing and full collection access
  • Public computer access
  • Seating, table and study room access
  • Self-serve printing, photocopying, scanning and faxing
  • Membership and information services
  • Limited Makerspace services
  • Outreach social worker services
  • Expanded opening hours (Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m.–5 p.m.)

Branch capacity is currently limited to 15% in accordance with Alberta Health guidelines.

Our contactless holds pickup service, Library Takeout and Personal Picks Pack, will remain available. Meanwhile, EPL classes and events will continue to be held virtually until further notice. McConachie and West Henday Promenade branches and epl2go Literacy Vans will resume service when reopening plans expand.

EPL remains committed to meeting your needs where possible while following the public health restrictions in place. Since the temporary closure of all EPL locations in December 2020, EPL has maintained rigorous cleaning procedures and standards which will remain as we reopen. We continue to require customers to follow health protocols including mandatory masks for indoor spaces, mandatory hand sanitizing or washing, and physical distancing (of at least 2 metres) measures.  Watch this video for details.

If you prefer to access the Library from the comfort of your home, our digital resources are still available. Plus, you can chat virtually with us at epl.ca/ContactEPL or over the phone at 780-496-7000 or text 587-817-0337. Whether you want to discover new resources or have any questions, we’re always happy to hear from you.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time as we work together to ensure the well-being of all Edmontonians. Welcome back to EPL!
