Edmonton Public Library Update #6: COVID-19 Response

Dear Library Customer,

As you know, the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) has been closely monitoring the developments related to COVID-19. This is a constantly evolving situation and we continue to work collaboratively with City of Edmonton and Alberta Health officials to ensure EPL practices align with new information as it is available.

On Tuesday, Nov. 24, the provincial government announced new health restrictions that impact EPL, which include wearing a face covering inside the Library at all times and no social gatherings in any setting. EPL is a natural meeting place for people and ideas, and we know our community values the ability to connect and share within our walls. However, in accordance with the enhanced public health measures, we ask customers refrain from socially gathering at EPL. Only customers who live in the same household will be permitted to sit within two metres of one another. Additionally, eating and drinking inside the Library is no longer permitted. We understand the importance of social connection and will continue to offer virtual classes and events that support a safe, fun and educational way to connect with each other.

Currently, all library locations remain open. We’ve been diligent in implementing measures to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 and its impact since we reopened in June. These measures include limiting branch capacity to below 20% (lower than the provincial government measures of 25%), wearing a face covering, practising proper hand hygiene, and maintaining physical distance (of at least two metres) from others.  In addition to regularly scheduled cleaning, all EPL locations are cleaned and thoroughly disinfected based on AHS guidelines.

The health of our staff and customers remains our key priority. We’ve also made it easier than ever for you and your family to access our materials with Library Takeout. Using this service, you can enjoy curbside pickup to check out your holds from select branches during opening hours.

If you prefer to access the Library from the comfort of your home, you can continue to have free and unlimited use of EPL’s digital resources through EPL from Home. Plus, you can chat with us at epl.ca/ContactEPL or over the phone at 780-496-7000 or text 587-817-0337. Whether you want to discover new resources, receive book recommendations, or have any questions, we’re always happy to hear from you.

Thank you for your patience as we work together to ensure the well-being of all Edmontonians and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
