Say hello to EPL’s new Capilano Branch

New Capilano Branch celebrated at Grand Opening

For immediate release:

EDMONTON, AB,  November 23, 2018 – A new Edmonton Public Library space complete with serene views and natural light is now a place Capilano residents can call their own.

The new 11,000 square foot standalone Capilano Branch opened at 9915 67 Street NW along the Fulton Ravine on November 8, 2018. EPL has been serving the Capilano community since 1966, and the new library has a larger community room, quiet study space, and its very own makerspace. The new branch also addresses accessibility challenges of the previous location, improves the customer experience, and provides stunning architecture with plenty of natural light.

“The new Capilano Branch is an outstanding addition to the community,” says Pilar Martinez, EPL’s Chief Executive Officer. “The design ties in natural light, seating areas and landscaping with the neighbouring ravine, while also incorporating all of the features and services our customers need.”

Visitors to the new library can enjoy a seated study space along a wall of windows with the ravine as a backdrop. In the makerspace, they can use iMacs, a 3D printer, vinyl cutter, digital conversion station and even a sewing machine.

“Ever since it first opened over 50 years ago, EPL’s Capilano Branch has been a well-used and loved community hub – but it was time for an upgrade,” says Martinez.

Installation is underway of a public art piece, opens a new window in the new branch. Local artists Sergio Serrano and Alexander Stewart worked with customers and neighbours to create a number of sculptures that will hang from the ceiling, representing the experiences that shape the Capilano community.

The $11.8 million project, designed by Patkau Architects/Group2 Architecture, is targeting LEED Silver certification. One of 21 branches across Edmonton, it is EPL’s fourth building project to open in 2018, opens a new window.
