Media Release: Explore Your Library

Reignite Curiosity at the Edmonton Public Library’s Open House

For immediate release:

EDMONTON, AB, Friday, September 16, 2022 — The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is inviting Edmontonians to explore the Library with an Open House on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Open House is part of the Library’s Explore EPL campaign, opens a new window, which encourages Edmontonians to visit their local branch in person and experience what a modern library has to offer. With branch closures and reduced services due to COVID-19 in recent years, EPL is inviting customers to visit their neighbourhood library to reimagine what’s possible.

“The Library has come along way since we first opened in 1913,” said Pilar Martinez, CEO of EPL. “It’s been a remarkable evolution. There’s so much to do, learn and explore at all of our locations. From cooking classes to interactive digital experiences to our amazing library collections, we want Edmontonians to reignite their curiosity in their public library.”

Public libraries play a crucial role in engaging and strengthening communities. The resources and services available through public libraries are more important than ever. They are one of the last remaining public spaces where individuals are not required to make a purchase and can enjoy a welcoming and inclusive environment.

EPL received over 7.7 million visits last year and over 34,000 people signed up for a library card, a 20% increase from 2020. While digital initiatives are becoming increasingly popular, EPL is encouraging Edmontonians to return in person and visit one of the city’s most used and loved services.

All 21 library locations will participate in the Open House which will offer live performances, classes and events for all ages, treats and much more. Select locations will feature celebrated entertainers, such as magician Sheldon Casavant, the Firefly Theatre Circus and even a close encounter with West Edmonton Mall’s penguins. In addition to external performers, EPL locations will offer programming facilitated by library staff, including making blueberry bracelets in PÎYÊSÎW WÂSKÂHIKAN (Indigenous gathering space in Stanley A. Milner Library), a Tech Petting Zoo and more.

Whether preparing children for a lifetime of learning, welcoming new Canadians, engaging with marginalized Edmontonians, delivering 3D printing workshops or helping someone with their resume, EPL provides Edmontonians with endless possibilities.

Media are invited to attend the Open House at select library locations. Please contact Karen Chidiak to book a slot by Thursday, Sept. 22. Additional event details to follow in the coming weeks.
