EPL Unveils Milner Library Time Capsule

Love letters, EPL memorabilia to be sealed within walls of revitalized library.

For immediate release:

EDMONTON, AB, May 7, 2019 – The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) unveiled a time capsule that will live within the walls of the soon-to-be-completed revitalized Stanley A. Milner Library for the next 100 years.

The time capsule, which holds a collection of library mementos and love letters contributed by EPL staff, trustees and customers, will be sealed within the walls of one of the library’s stairwells on the first floor, adjacent to its new expanded children’s library.

“The time capsule is another exciting feature of the revitalized Milner Library, and one that symbolizes this city’s longstanding commitment to its public libraries – as shown by the many love notes we received to include in the capsule,” says EPL CEO Pilar Martinez.

Opened in 1967, the Stanley A. Milner Library is the heart of EPL and Edmonton’s downtown, welcoming over 1.2 million annual visits prior to its temporary closure for renovations on December 31, 2016. The revitalized Milner Library will feature a children’s library more than three times the size of the previous facility, an expanded Makerspace, a total of 28,000 square feet of community meeting spaces, a high-tech theatre, a multi-storey interactive simulation wall and much more.

The Milner Library renewal work began in January 2017 with the grand opening planned for spring 2020.
