EPL Celebrates The Kitchen Grand Opening

Celebration Includes In-Person and Virtual Activities

For immediate release:

EDMONTON, AB, Thursday, March 17, 2022 — The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) celebrated the grand opening of The Kitchen on Wednesday, March 16.

The Grand Opening Celebration included in-person food demonstrations and a tour of the modern, fully equipped space.

“We want to create hands-on, foundational learning opportunities for beginners to help increase knowledge and interest in food literacy and nutrition in our city,” said Pilar Martinez, CEO of EPL. “The Kitchen will be available for community groups and others looking to connect and learn through cooking or sharing cultural practices with food. Cooking is a natural way to bring people together.”

The Kitchen is now open on the second floor of the Stanley A. Milner Library. The 2,100 square foot—a hybrid of commercial and home kitchen space with commercial grade ovens, equipment and state of the art ventilation will help Edmontonians learn new skills and gain hands-on experiences with cooking, nutrition and sustainability. EPL will offer entry-level cooking classes in-person and online available to people of all ages and abilities. EPL will collaborate and build connections to help serve diverse community needs for food-related learning, community-building and food entrepreneurship.

A Virtual Sneak Peek event will take place on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20 where Edmontonians can participate from the comfort of their home. Staff and local chefs and experts will guide viewers through food-related classes throughout the weekend. From Indigenous Potato Pancakes with Chef Scott Iserhoff, to delicious fudgy brownies with Stephanie Markakis-Plouffe, to making special alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails with mixologist and sommelier, Erick Rosende, there will be plenty of options for everyone to enjoy.
