National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to celebrate the vibrant cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada. This month is an opportunity to recognize the strength, creativity, and resilience of Indigenous communities, honouring the languages, stories, and achievements that continue to shape our country.

In Edmonton, we celebrate the diverse Indigenous peoples who call this land home, including the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, and Métis. Their deep connections to the land, their traditions, and their histories have enriched our communities and continue to inspire future generations.

A Time for Celebration and Learning

National Indigenous History Month is a chance to celebrate the beauty and richness of Indigenous cultures. Across the country, Indigenous artists, storytellers, musicians, and knowledge keepers share their traditions through music, dance, language, and art. It’s a time to experience the joy and vibrancy of Indigenous culture while also learning more about the histories, customs, and ongoing contributions of Indigenous peoples.

This month is also a time to acknowledge and support Indigenous voices, businesses, and creators. From literature to film, traditional crafts to contemporary art, Indigenous expression is diverse and dynamic. By engaging with Indigenous stories, we honour the past while building stronger relationships for the future.

What is National Indigenous History Month?

Established in 2009, National Indigenous History Month is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating Indigenous heritage and cultures. Throughout June, Canadians are encouraged to attend events, explore Indigenous-led initiatives, and take time to learn about the deep histories and traditions that predate Canada itself. This month is about honouring Indigenous peoples as thriving, innovative, and vital members of our communities.

Indigenous Art

EPL is committed to showcasing Indigenous art in our branches, recognizing its importance in preserving and celebrating Indigenous cultures. Art is a powerful medium for storytelling, teaching, and honoring the history, traditions, and contemporary experiences of Indigenous communities. By integrating Indigenous art into our spaces, we create an environment that acknowledges and respects Indigenous perspectives while fostering meaningful connections with the broader community.

A key highlight of our collection is the Indigenous art display at the Stanley A. Milner Library. Curated by MJ Belcourt Moses, former City of Edmonton Indigenous Artist-in-Residence, this collection features works from Indigenous artists that reflect the strength, resilience, and beauty of Indigenous cultures.

Below is a highlight of a few of the pieces from our collection. We invite you to visit your local EPL branch or the Stanley A. Milner Library to experience our wonderful collection in person.
