Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in the ground. It can build up in your home undetected, which is problematic as exposure to radon gas is the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. Recent research from the University of Calgary indicates that one in six homes in western Canada have high radon levels.

The Radon Screening Kits at EPL include an Airthing screening device, which allows you to get an initial reading of radon levels in your home. Please note the Radon Screening Kits are not a replacement for long-term radon testing kits that are available for purchase. See the guide included in the Kit for full details.

Like other items in our collection, the Kits have a three-week loan period with the possibility of two renewals if there are no other customers waiting. Kits are available to borrow between Sept. 1 and April 30 each year.

In the summer months, people tend to leave windows and doors in their homes open, allowing radon to safely dissipate into the atmosphere. As a result, Radon Screening Kits will not be available to borrow between May 1 and Aug. 31 each year, as radon readings are less accurate during the summer.
