Q&A with Thu Parmar
What is your favourite library memory or experience?
My favorite library memory is the kindness from the librarians. Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money. I spent hours at the Idylwylde (Bonnie Doon) library. I read so many books, the librarians let me go over the 40 borrowing book limit so I would have enough to read over the weekend, when they were closed. That meant so much to me.
What is one book you think everyone should read and why?
The Wealthy Barber. Many people often ask me about money management and I direct them here. I’ve also met David Chilton before and he breaks it down into simple ideas on how to invest. It’s not always about how much you make, but how much you spend.
What vital role does EPL play in a thriving and vibrant Edmonton?
I believe in strong, connected communities and the EPL plays a large role in this. I love seeing EPL trucks at community events. I see a future where the EPL is connected in every community and continues to be a gathering space for all Edmontonians.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why?
I would want to be Kristy Thomas, founder and president of The Baby-Sitters Club. I adored these books growing up. The Club filled a community need and was also fun by bringing a group of friends together in a social enterprise. I love fun endeavors.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at your local library?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned at my library and through reading is that my opinion can be changed with facts and insight. Never underestimate the value of other perspectives, especially well written ones. Our opinions are a reflection of the information we have at any given time.
If you could host a program at the library, what would it be about?
I would love to host an existing and my favorite program at the library. Sing, Sign, Laugh and Learn is one I brought my kids to often. We still sing the songs.
