Q&A with Sara Awatta
What is your favourite library memory or experience?
My favourite library memory is from high school. My friends and I would spend time there after classes, studying together and sharing ideas. On weekends, especially in grades 11 and 12, I loved spending Saturday mornings exploring the shelves and discovering new books and magazines.
What is one book you think everyone should read and why?
I think everyone should read Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It’s a heartfelt and approachable book that reminds us to focus on what really matters: people, connection, and purpose.
What vital role does EPL play in a thriving and vibrant Edmonton?
EPL is a cornerstone of a thriving Edmonton. It provides free access to learning, technology, and community spaces that bring people together. Whether it’s early literacy programs for kids, resources for job seekers, or a safe place for newcomers and seniors, EPL helps level the playing field and ensures every Edmontonian has access to knowledge and opportunity.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why?
I would be Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. She’s smart, determined, and uses her knowledge to solve problems and help others. I admire how she stands up for what’s right, even when it’s hard, and how she believes in the power of education to change the world.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at your local library?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned at my local library is that it’s a place where everyone belongs. Growing up, I spent Saturdays there just exploring books and magazines, and it taught me that learning can be fun and welcoming not just something you do for school.
If you could host a program at the library, what would it be about?
I would host a program that helps teens and young adults explore different career paths in a hands-on way. It could include mini-workshops, mentorship circles, and “day in the life” talks from people in different industries so young people can see what’s possible and ask real questions about their future.
