Rupesh Patel – City Councillor Candidate

      by sellisSeptember 19, 2025

      Introducing Rupesh Patel

Meet Rupesh Patel, who is running to join our City Council in Ward pihêsiwin ᐱᐦᐁᓯᐏᐣ. We have asked all candidates to share their thoughts on the Edmonton Public Library through a short questionnaire. Here's what Rupesh had to say.

      Q&A with Rupesh Patel

What is your favourite library memory or experience?

Taking my two young daughters for Sing, Sign, Laugh and Play or those type of activities.

What is one book you think everyone should read and why?

The Leader Who Has No Title by Robin Sharma. It was my first leadership book and taught me that leadership isn't about chasing a title, but it's about persistence, expanding your boundaries of comfort, and having no regrets. I read this book in my 20s, and it was formative in how I've grown as a leader.

What vital role does EPL play in a thriving and vibrant Edmonton?

It plays an incredible role. We need to fund our libraries as they provide safe gathering spots for all types of community members. The values of sharing, conservation, collective learning, and compassion are all found at our wonderful libraries.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why?

Mufasa from The Lion King is what immediately comes to mind. It was always my favourite Disney movie, and I loved his temperament and presence!

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at your local library?

Watching my kids interact with other kids has expanded my patience not only for just my children but other families. It's also taught me that people still need and want libraries. The Riverbend library is bursting at the seems with the amount of demand.

If you could host a program at the library, what would it be about?

The program would support teens with practical life skills like personal finance and leadership. I'm not sure what the turnout is for this age group, but I imagine teens are consuming information primarily through electronic form. So, having practical programs can bring folks back to the library.
