When I mentor writers, questions about publishing always arise. This is wonderful because it means that writers have used their imaginations and literary skills to craft stories that now need to be shared. Publishing is all about sharing that hard work; but how do you do it? How do you get your writing into the world for others to read?
There is a wide spectrum of publishing options available to writers, from online magazines to anthologies, literary journals to book publishers. If you are looking to publish your book, for example, you might aim for the traditional route or opt to self-publish.
With self-publishing, you can wear the project manager hat and organize all aspects of releasing your book on your own—or you can get help through facilitated self-publishing platforms. These are companies that help manage your book project and you pay them a fee for the services you need. With traditional publishing, the big publishers require you to have an agent, however the smaller presses can be approached directly by the author-to-be.
There are options other than traditional and self-publishing. A growing middle-way is hybrid publishing, where authors co-invest in publishing their book along with the publisher. This way is for entrepreneurial authors and those with unique projects that might fall outside the scope of traditional publishers.
Here is a resource round-up for all ways you might want to publish your work. Research, learn, and be informed about your options.
Good luck on your publishing journey!
