Q&A with Anne Stevenson
What is your favourite library memory or experience?
We took our daughter to the Stanley Milner Library for the first time on Family Day in 2021. I will always remember her exploring the space and the delightful chaos of dozens of other kids running around, enjoying all that the library has to offer.
What is one book you think everyone should read and why?
I can't choose just one so I'm going to bend the rules just a little! My one fiction pick is Ragged Company by Richard Wagamese. It reminds us of the depth of stories that the people we pass each day may be carrying, and the value of building relationships with those around us.
My non-fiction choice is Self Compassion by Kristin Neff, which highlights the importance of kindness, mindfulness, and connectedness.
What vital role does EPL play in a thriving and vibrant Edmonton?
EPL adds so much to our city. Individually, all Edmontonians benefit from having access to no-cost resources that enrich our lives, from books and movies, to music and maker spaces. As a community, we benefit by having EPL as a gathering place for civic life. It's a true public space—one that is open to all, promotes the exchange of ideas, and helps us see the many things that bring us together.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why?
I would choose to be Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise! I love Star Trek and Captain Picard definitely has the best job of all.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at your local library?
The most recent lesson I learned was while watching the Flashback documentary at Stanley Milner. In addition to the fascinating history of this legendary place, the film also highlighted the incredible strength, joy, and influence of Edmonton's 2SLGBTQ+ community in our city.
If you could host a program at the library, what would it be about?
My program would be based on a book club I used to be part of. Instead of all reading the same book, we came together and shared what we were each currently reading. I loved hearing the eclectic mix of others' book choices and it led me to some really wonderful literary gems.
