Introducing Aggripa Wajo
Meet Aggripa Wajo, who is running to join our City Council in Ward Anirniq. We have asked all candidates to share their thoughts on the Edmonton Public Library through a short questionnaire. Here's what Aggripa had to say.
Q&A with Aggripa Wajo
What is your favourite library memory or experience?
My favourite library memory would have to be spending time with friends during my university days, discussing and debating book reviews. My friends and I would huddle around a table and look through printed book reviews, comparing the thoughts of popular critics with our own. I look back on this memory fondly, as I believe it truly depicts the core purpose of public libraries: learning, togetherness, and growth.
What is one book you think everyone should read and why?
A book everyone should read is Chinua Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart’. The book is a modern classic, following “the story of a respected leader in a West African community, whose life and traditional culture are tragically disrupted by the arrival of British missionaries and the British colonial government”. The theme of this book surrounds change and resistance, making it a truly impactful read.
What vital role does EPL play in a thriving and vibrant Edmonton?
EPL represents the heart of Edmonton. It’s where Edmontonians come together to find a sense of community and belonging. Whether it’s someone working on the resume that finally lands them that dream job, or a “Mommy-and-Me” program that helps remind a struggling mother she’s not alone, EPL IS Edmonton; it keeps us going.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why?
If I could be any fictional character, I would be ‘Obi Okonkwo’, from Chinua Achebe’s ‘No Longer at Ease’. The book delves into the contradictions that tradition and modernity can bring. However, the main character, Obi, uses his wit, strength, and love of community to grapple with this contradiction and ultimately bring change to the home he loves.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at your local library?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned at my local library over the years has been coming to understand the function of these community pillars as ‘third places’. A community library operates as a lifeline, positioning itself as one of the few landing points in our busy and often chaotic lives. When you come to EPL, you enter a new world, one full of creativity, community, and innovation. Libraries are central to Edmonton’s success.
If you could host a program at the library, what would it be about?
Returning to its roots, I would host ‘Community Engagement Forums’ at the library. This would invite the community to come make their voices heard, promoting productive and open dialogue in an accessible and familiar space. It’s my vision to bring everyone on board; the thoughts and opinions of the community are the foundation on which I will enact change.
