EPL opens new location in Heritage Valley

Third small-footprint branch is the 21st library in Edmonton

For immediate release:

EDMONTON, AB,  May 25, 2018 – The increasing need for library services in southwest Edmonton is being met, thanks to a new small storefront location of the Edmonton Public Library (EPL).

The Heritage Valley Branch, featuring a sampling of EPL’s foundational services, is the third model of its kind in the city. One of EPL’s goals is to reduce barriers to accessing library services, which includes the design of new spaces with a selection of services specifically designed to meet the neighbourhood demographics of underserved communities.

The new 3,200 square foot branch, located at 2755 119A Street SW, is in a corner suite with plenty of natural light, and includes core library services such as items for borrowing, holds pickup, programs and more.

“The demand for library services in Edmonton only continues to grow,” said Pilar Martinez, Chief Executive Officer of the Edmonton Public Library. “EPL has been successful in adapting by working to provide innovative delivery of materials, resources and programming – and this location in Heritage Valley is another example of that.”

After first opening on April 4, 2018, the new location saw over 7,000 visits in the first month, an average of 45 customers per program during that same timeframe, and over 300 residents sign up for free memberships.

EPL continues to produce fast and cost-effective ways to bring library services to newer areas currently without easy access to public library service. Smaller storefront branches opened in West Henday in 2015 and in McConachie in 2016. EPL also has a full fleet of four epl2go Literacy Vans, one for each quadrant of the city, bringing library services where and when they are needed.

The new Heritage Valley branch is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The new location is EPL’s 21st, and is also the second of four building projects to open in 2018.
