Top Circulating Children’s Books from 2018

In 2018, Edmontonians took home children's physical items over 3.3 million times! While not all these items were books, here is our list of the top circulating children's titles from 2018 and some librarians' thoughts on why these titles were so popular.

1. The Getaway by Jeff Kinney

Released in 2017, The Getaway is the twelfth book in Jeff Kinney's award-winning series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It's one of the top children's series at EPL and it's no surprise that it was highly requested last year.

2. Double Down by Jeff Kinney

What do you read when you can't get the latest book in the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series? You read the next best thing! Double Down is the eleventh book in the series.

3.Tales From A Not-so-friendly Frenemy by Rachel Renée Russell

The Dork Diaries series by Rachel Renée Russell is popular among elementary school students. Its diary format uses drawings, comic strips and other doodles to tell the story of a girl trying to survive middle school. Tales From A Not-so-friendly Frenemy is the eleventh book in the series.

4.Wonder by R.J. Palacio

Wonder was a Junior Division nominee in the 2015 YRCA and became a feature film in 2017. It's no wonder that Wonder made EPL's top 2018 check-outs list!

5.Old School by Jeff Kinney

Old School is the tenth book in the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney.

Top Children's Picturebooks

1. Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems

Mo Willems is a well-known children's author, so it's no surprise that his works appear several times in this list! Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! is a timeless Willems classic.

2.If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff

Parents and children alike have enjoyed If You Give a Mouse A Cookie since it was first published in 1985. This is also a popular storytime title at EPL.

3. The Duckling Gets A Cookie!? by Mo Willems

Mo Willems' famous Pigeon makes another appearance in The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? In this story, Pigeon gets jealous over Duckling's special treat.

4.That Is Not A Good Idea! by Mo Willems 

That Is Not A Good Idea! is another Mo Willems title from EPL's Storytime Collection. While this book is not about Pigeon, Willems says that he has included Pigeon in all his books. Check this one out and see if you can spot Pigeon!

5.Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are is a perennial classic. First published in 1963, this picturebook has won many awards, and is part of EPL's Storytime Collection.
