10 Totally Fun Things to Do in Edmonton on Family Day 2018

It’s February in Edmonton and many of us are daydreaming about a sunny beach with a great book and the sound of the surf crashing in our ears. What could possibly be better than that? Why Family Day in Edmonton of course! Every year on Family Day, Edmonton transforms from a bustling metropolis into a land of whimsy, imagination and ice.

There are tons of great Family Day activities and events to choose from, so we’ve rounded up a few of our favourites to help you decide what to do with your family this holiday.

10. Enjoy Winter at the Silver Skate Festival

The Silver Skate Festival, opens a new window is one of the longest running winter festivals in Edmonton. Bring your family to see Hawrelak Park transformed into a winter wonderland with tons of fun activities that are great for the whole family. Admission is by donation.

9. Chill Out at the Edmonton Ice Castle

Channel your inner Elsa as you tour a one-of-a-kind castle built from ice, opens a new window and illuminated with colourful lights. Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets range from $9.95 to $16.95.

8. Explore Pop Culture

POPnology at the Telus World of Science is an interactive and engaging exhibit that explores how pop culture has influenced current technology. Plus, you can take your photo with the DeLorean Time Machine—great Scott! Regular admission rates apply.

7. Learn About Recycling

From noon to 3 p.m., go to the Reuse Centre, opens a new window to craft, create and learn about recycling and upcycling. This family day event is free.

6. Celebrate Alberta’s Forests at AGA

Participate in art activities that celebrate Alberta’s forests and the animals that live there. AGA’s Family Day event, opens a new window runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.

5. Discover Edmonton’s Neon Past

Edmonton’s Neon sign museum, opens a new window at 104 Street and 104 Avenue is the perfect place to explore this Family Day. Take a hot chocolate and enjoy the bright lights of historic Edmonton—for free!

4. Hang Out at the Legislature

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Family Day, the Alberta Legislature, opens a new window will open its doors to offer lots of free family fun to participate in.

3. Play Game After Game After Game

Take your family out for only $2.50 per person per hour. Hexagon Board Game Café, opens a new window has a huge selection, making it a great spot to check out new games and decide what your next board game purchase will be.

2. Experience the Funicular

Take a ride on Edmonton’s newest attraction: the funicular, opens a new window. Stand on the lookout and appreciate the breathtaking views, then take the inclined elevator down to explore the largest urban park in Canada, our river valley—no charge.

Find all the family fun at the Edmonton Public Library, opens a new window! Open from 1 to 5 p.m., we have loads of fun Family Day programs and drop-in activities that are great for all ages. Does your family love music? Jam out with them and make your own musical instrument! Are they more on the technically-minded side? Compete in some fun and interactive LEGO challenges! Whatever your family is in the mood for, there’s so much to explore and fun to be had at EPL (and it’s all FREE)!
