The Slippery Summer Slide

Written by Shelby Quinlan, Library Assistant

As a teacher turned library assistant myself, I know first-hand about the summer slide.  Not the fun summer slide where you spend all summer at the waterpark, but the tricky summer slide where students’ brains become a little doughier after bingeing on Netflix and Minecraft all summer.

Studies show that reading just a few books throughout the summer can make a huge difference in combatting summer learning loss, especially in terms of reading comprehension and writing skills, areas that can enhance performance in all other subjects.  The great news is that reading prevents the summer slide best when students read for enjoyment and choose materials themselves.

With their free library card and our TD Summer Reading Club, students will have incentive to fill in their reading logbooks and be entered to win amazing prizes like an iPad or an Oilers prize pack.  Summer Starts at EPL programs will keep students thinking on their feet all summer long.

Kids will enjoy amazing art programs and even STEAM-based programs, which recognize the way that Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics are connected in practice, and how effective they can be as a tool for solving problems when used together. EPL will be featuring STEAM-based programs such as scratch and coding.

That's not all; students can sign up for Beanstack to track their reading online and receive online badges as well as custom-tailored book recommendations via email.  Plus, Tumblebooks will keep kids entertained with games and animated eBooks in English, French and Spanish.  Didn’t I tell you we had you covered?!  You're welcome!

And for those students who could use a little more structured support, Solaro provides lessons, reviews, and quizzes in Alberta Curriculum specific content from grade 3-12!  I know how to get teachers excited . . . those three sweet words are like a balm to the soul.

You know what else is like a balm to the soul?  Summer vacation. So enjoy, and rest easy this summer knowing that Summer Starts at EPL will have your kids on track!
