The Forward Thinking Speaker Series reflects EPL’s rich history of taking risks, trying new things, and redefining the modern library. EPL invites thought-leaders from a variety of industries speaking on a variety of topics to share their insights, ideas, experiences, and viewpoints, with the goal of helping us purposefully build better organizations, neighborhoods, and communities.

The Edmonton Public Library is pleased to present Championing Equality: LGBTQ (ac)counts in Sports on Wednesday, August 24 at the Chateau Lacombe as part of the Forward Thinking Speaker Series.

This panel conversation will feature local amateur LGBTQ athletes and Brian Burke, President of Hockey Operations for the Calgary Flames Hockey Club and an advocate for LGBTQ equality and acceptance in the NHL community and beyond. Moderating the session will be the University of Alberta’s Dr. Kris Wells, Assistant Professor and Director of Programs & Services at the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services.

Just announced for the panel is Olympian speed skater Anastasia Bucsis who has competed in 46 World Cups, 6 World Championships and 2 Olympic Games. When Anastasia is not training towards the 2018 Winter Olympics in Korea, she is diligently working towards completing her Communications degree at the University of Calgary, and is passionate about mental health and LGBT issues both on and off the playing field.
