Mission, Values & Business Plan

Who we are, what we value.

Our mission is simple. We share! We share with our city, our community, our customers and ourselves. We share stories, ideas and experiences. We share our space! We are Edmonton’s largest lender of all kinds of information and entertainment. Our greatest passion is creating connections that help, grow, inspire and change.   Our Shared Values document brings it all together.

Committed to intellectual freedom.

With over 160,000 Edmontonians enjoying our services regularly, our customers come from a rich mixture of cultures, representing over 36 countries from around the world, each holding a diversity of opinions and beliefs. One of the vital community roles the library plays is to protect the Intellectual Freedom of our many customers, including yours.

"It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity, including those which some elements of society may consider to be unconventional, unpopular, or unacceptable. To this end, libraries shall acquire and make available the widest variety of materials."- Canadian Library Association

EPL strongly supports this statement and supplies a wide range of materials allowing for individuals to use them without obstruction and to develop their own informed opinions and ideas.

Where we are going and how we are going to get there.

Our Mission is why we exist and our Vision is how we are going to get there. We are experts in providing access to the world's information, ideas and entertainment - enabling a lifetime of learning, engagement and possibility for every Edmontonian.

Our 2014-2018 Strategic Goals provide the blueprint not only to plan for future services, but to prioritize existing resources.

EPL's 2014-2016 Business Plan, Just Getting Started, takes our Strategic Goals and brings them to life, outlining the priorities and actions we will take over the next three years.

We have created videos to highlight some of those actions:
