Edmonton - City of Champions:
Although, apparently CFRN-TV had espoused the "City of Champions" slogan in times past, it wasn't until the Edmonton Economic Development Authority placed a 12-page advertising supplement (entitled "Edmonton - City of Champions") in the February 1988 edition of Canadian Business News magazine that the slogan really took off.

There appears to be some question regarding what the "City of Champions" refers to. A common explanation is that it refers to the number of sporting events won by individuals and teams from Edmonton over the years.

Another source has suggested that the term originated with then-mayor Laurence Decore after a tornado swept through the city on July 31, 1987. Mayor Decore said that the community's response to the tornado was evidence that Edmonton was "a city of champions"
