Intellectual Freedom and the Library

Every citizen of Canada has the fundamental right to have access to all expressions of knowledge, creativity and intellectual activity, and to express their thoughts publicly. Yet books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and other materials continue to be banned at the border, removed from libraries, schools and bookstores.

"It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity, including those which some elements of society may consider to be unconventional, unpopular, or unacceptable. To this end, libraries shall acquire and make available the widest variety of materials." - Canadian Library Association

The Edmonton Public Library adheres to this statement and supplies a wide range of materials allowing for individuals to use them without obstruction and to develop their own informed opinions and ideas.
