Our Investments in Literacy

Our goal is to transform our community by improving literacy and making it easy for Edmontonians to learn, create and discover.

Welcome Baby

Your generous response to our recent donation campaign means that more than 4,360 Edmonton newborns will receive a Welcome Baby Early Literacy Kit beginning a lifetime of learning and literacy.  With your help we raised over $110,000 taking us ever closer to our $2.5 million Centennial goal – raising money literacy and accessibility.

Customer Testimonials

EPL's Welcome Baby program puts books and early literacy resources into the hands of newborns and their parents as part of the two-month immunization.  A library card, books and story times are the first steps to a love of reading and success later in life.

With your financial donation every child in Edmonton will have the same opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. A child without early literacy training is:

  • 25% more likely to drop out of school*
  • 40% more likely to become a teenage parent*
  • 70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime*

The cost of a Welcome Baby Early Literacy Kit is just $25.00 per baby.

Literacy Vans

EPL Literacy Vans will bring the latest technology resources, along with library programs and services, to Edmontonians who don't have easy access to the library — those who live in new or underserved communities throughout our growing city, including in seniors' homes, daycares, boys and girls clubs, group homes, schools and more. We do not want location or transportation issues to be a barrier for those groups who need us the most.

Your donation will help put four new literacy vans - one for each quandrant of the city - onto Edmonton Streets.

Approximately $250,000 is required for equipment and program costs for one Literacy Van.
