On Monday, June 15, 2009 the Edmonton Public Library unveiled its Aboriginal Collection, celebrating the arts, literature and culture of the Aboriginal community.

  • The celebration included:
  • A Pipe Ceremony lead by Elder Jerry Wood
  • An opening song by the Amiskwaciy Academy Drummers with Elder Francis Whiskeyjack
  • Performances by Poet Marilyn Dumont and Olooraik, Inuit throat singers

There are now 11 EPL locations with dedicated areas for diverse Aboriginal collections. Some collections are small and some are large, with the numbers of items ranging from 500 to more than 4,000. Materials include CDs, DVDs, children's materials, fiction and non-fiction materials as well as Aboriginal language collections. All EPL branches carry Aboriginal materials. A wide variety of Aboriginal programs - featuring Aboriginal instructors or performers - are also featured across Edmonton, in all branches.
