1892 Edmonton incorporated as a town, Matthew McCauley elected as its first mayor (Ordinance assented to January 9, 1892, N.W.T. No. 7, 1891/1892). Council consisted of mayor and six aldermen.
1895 For the first time elections of school trustees were held on the same day as elections of civic officials.
1902 First bylaw passed by Council. It authorized expenditures for the installation of a water and sewer system east of 102nd Street.
1904 Edmonton incorporated as a city. (Ordinance assented to October 8, 1904, N.W.T. no. 19, 1904). K. W. MacKenzie became the first mayor of the City of Edmonton.
Number of aldermen increased from six to eight.
1905 The Province of Alberta was inaugurated on September 1, 1905. Edmonton was named the temporary capital.
1906 Edmonton was chosen as the capital of Alberta at the first Legislative Assembly on March 15, 1906 in Edmonton. There was a strong rivalry between the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. The towns of Athabasca, Banff, Cochrane, Red Deer, Strathcona and Vegreville were also contenders. The issue was settled by the Assembly by a vote of 16 to 8 in favor of Edmonton.
1912 The City of Strathcona and the City of Edmonton amalgamated on February 1(assented to December 20, 1911. Statutes of Alberta, Chapter 66, 1911-12). Number of aldermen increased from eight to ten. The amalgamation agreement required that two of the aldermen elected be from the south side. Same applied to school trustees.
1917 Village of West Edmonton (Calder) was annexed after a vote on April 26.
1920 Plebiscite held on whether aldermen should receive payment for their services. Rejected. Held again in 1921 and rejected once more.
1922 Plebiscite approved to switch from the plurality system to the proportional representation system in civic elections.
1926 Plebiscite held on whether the mayor should hold office for a two-year term. Rejected.
1927 Plebiscite approved the switch from proportional representation system to theplurality system in civic elections. The PR system proved too complex and confusing for Edmonton electorate).
1930 Election day changed from 2nd Monday in December to 2nd Wednesday in November. It was thought that more people would vote if elections were held in warmer weather.
1935 Plebiscite held on whether to abolish property qualification for candidates formayor and aldermen. Not approved.
1936 City Council authorized salaries for aldermen at the rate of $500 per annum.
1937 Another plebiscite on whether the mayor should hold office for a two-year period. Rejected again.
1944 Election day changed from 2nd Wednesday in November to 1st Wednesday in November.
1946 Adoption of daylight saving time was approved by voters in plebiscite on November 6.
1947 Plebiscite approved the mayor holding office for a two-year term.
1952 Election day changed from 1st Wednesday in November to 3rd Wednesday in October.
1960 Referendum held on the south side representation qualifications (1912 amalgamation agreement required that two of the aldermen elected be from the south side). 17,204 voted in favor of eliminating special south side qualifications; 9,668 voted to retain them.
1961 Beverly annexed on December 30. Fluoridation plebiscite held and rejected.
1962 Plebiscite held on election frequency. Voters approved elections every two years, with elected officials serving two-year terms.
1964 Jasper Place annexed August 17. Fluoridation plebiscite held again and rejected once more. Number of aldermen increased to twelve. Plebiscite held on whether the Council should seek from the Provincial Government the power to allow and permit charging for Sunday sports. Approved.
1966 Fluoridation plebiscite held and this time approved. Plebiscite held on whether to allow and permit charging for Sunday sports. Approved.
1968 Plebiscite approved a new ward system to go into effect in the 1971 election. Three aldermen to represent each voting system. Provincial legislation regarding elections changed - elected officials to serve a three-year term and elections to be held every three years.
1980 City Council approved a new ward system on February 28. The number of wards increased to six. Each ward to be represented by two aldermen.
1982 General annexation on January 1.
1992 Plebiscite held on the future of the Edmonton Municipal Airport. Voters werein favor of keeping the airport open to passenger traffic.
1995 Another plebiscite held on the future of the Edmonton Municipal Airport. This time voters favored consolidating scheduled air service at the Edmonton International Airport. Voters were also in favor of closing the Keillor Road to traffic.
1995 On October 24 the council voted to use the gender-neutral term "councillor" instead of the traditional "alderman" as the official title.
