Borrowing Guide
- The basics...
- Please present your library card each time you wish to borrow Library materials.
- All items borrowed on your library card are your responsibility.
- Please notify the Library regarding any changes to your address or telephone number.
- If your library card is stolen or lost, please report it immediately to any Library branch. You are responsible for any unauthorized use of the card until its loss is reported to the Library.
- If the card belongs to someone under 18 years of age, the parent or guarantor is responsible for any fines or replacement charges.
- You will not be able to borrow items when:
- your late charges reach a total of $10.00
- you have 15 items or more overdue
- MAXIMUM TIME
- How long may I keep borrowed materials?
- 3 weeks for print, audio and interlibrary loans
- 1 week for videocassettes, DVDs, "Bestsellers to Go", "Flicks and Tunes To Go", Video Games
Extended loans may be arranged for special circumstances such as hospital stays, vacation, etc.
- MAXIMUM NUMBER OF ITEMS PER CARD
- How many items may I borrow from the Library?
- 40 items in total (we do offer reduced limit cards, with a 5 or 10 item maximum)
- 1 children's or teens' "Bestsellers to Go" book
- 1 adult "Bestsellers to Go" book
- 1 children's or teens' "Flicks to Go" DVD
- 1 adult "Flicks to Go" DVD
- 1 children's or teens' "Tunes to Go" CD
- 1 adult "Tunes to Go" CD
- YOU MAY RENEW MATERIALS TWICE IF:
- What if I am not done with my Library materials before the due date?
- They are not requested by another borrower
- Your library card is current
- Charges are less than $10
- You have fewer than 41 overdue items
- Exceptions:
- "Bestsellers to Go" – no renewals
- "Flicks and Tunes to Go" – no renewals
- Interlibrary loans - no renewals
- Renew by telephone... Items can be renewed by automated telephone renewal system by calling (780) 496-7047. Have a pen, paper and your library materials before you begin, then follow the instructions at each step of the renewal process with your telephone key pad.
- Renew by Internet... You can log on to the EPL website and renew your materials via My Account.
- Renew at a branch... Use one of the public catalogue terminals or speak to anyone at the checkout desk.
- HOLDS: YOU MAY REQUEST MATERIALS IF:
- You have fewer than 25 items on request (hold)
- Your library card is current
- Charges are less than $10
- You have fewer than 41 overdue items
- How will I know when my holds are ready to be picked up?
You will be notified by email or called by the automated calling system when your item(s) are ready (available) to be picked up.
Note: Interlibrary Loan holds cannot be suspended
- RETURN ON TIME
Late fees are charged on each item, every day. Please pay late charges of $10 before you borrow more materials.
- CHILDREN'S MATERIALS
- Books, magazines, pamphlets, CDs – 10 cents per item per day
- Videos, DVDs, "Bestsellers to Go", "Flicks and Tunes to Go", Video Games – 40 cents per item per day
- ADULT MATERIALS
- Books, magazines, pamphlets, CDs – 25 cents per item per day
- Videos, DVDs, "Bestsellers to Go", "Flicks and Tunes to Go" – $1.00 per item per day
- Interlibrary loans – $1 per item per day
- Returning materials...
Where can I return Library materials?
- Materials can be returned to any of the 17 Edmonton Public Library service points.
- After-hours returns are available at all service points, except for those located in malls:
- Capilano
- Londonderry
- Millwoods
- Lost or damaged materials...
What happens if I lose items from the Library or damage them?
- You will be charged a replacement cost, plus a processing fee for lost or damaged items. These charges vary with the item and any overdue charges you may have accumulated do not apply.
- Interlibrary loan items do not belong to EPL, but are borrowed from other libraries. If you lose or damage an item you have borrowed on interlibrary loan, you will be charged a replacement cost and an administrative fee. Both amounts are set by the other library (not EPL) and the amounts may be substantial.
- Overdue and other charges...
What if I am late in returning my materials?
If you do not return your materials by the due date, and they cannot be renewed, you will be required to pay overdue charges.
- What happens if I do not pay my charges?
- Any charges resulting from overdue, damaged or lost materials, can be paid upon return of the material, or reporting of the material.
- If you do not pay your fines and/or do not return your materials, your account may be sent, without notice, to a collection agency for recovery. You will not be notified ahead of time if this occurs.
- Are refunds for replacement fees available?
Refunds are available within 90 days of payment, if a lost catalogued item is found (any overdue charges are non-refundable). There are no refunds for uncatalogued items.
