Upcoming Events
Nov 04, 2008   Posted by: jwilson
Everyone is doing a great job reading YRCA books! We had a great discussion last Saturday. I am going to the Kaleidoscope Children's Literature Conference this weekend (Nov. 6-8) and will get a chance to hear Lois Lowry, Michael Morpurgo, and hopefully many other authors speak. If you have any questions or comments you would like me to pass along to any of the authors, please post them as a comment before Friday! If you click on the link below it will take you to a webpage, listing all the authors that will be speaking at the conference.
I am very excited to represent the Book Punks at this conference! There will be a special Book Punks program on Saturday November 15, 2 p.m. It will be all about my experiences at the conference and the answers to your questions. Hope to see you all there!

Fall Into Reading!
Sep 30, 2008   Posted by: jwilson
There are two great reading programs supported by Edmonton Public Library that happen in the Fall. The Young Reader's Choice Awards and Kids Read! Edmonton. The nominees for YRCA have been released since April and I know a few of you have already read some of the titles!
The new Kids Read! Edmonton title is "The Several Lives of Orphan Jack" by Sarah Ellis. Jack is an orphan who runs away from the school where he has grown up. He quickly learns that he needs to sell something that people want to earn food and money. Jack uses his talents to sell whims, fancies and notions. Read about Jack's adventures and learn to make up your own whims, fancies and notions in this awesome book!
The website is really cool too and there are lot's of neat activities and contests to enter.
Check out the links to the YRCA and Kids Read! Edmonton websites.
There are plenty of copies of the titles available at all Edmonton Public Library branches.
Tell me what you think about the YRCA nominees and "The Several Lives of Orphan Jack"...
P.S. For extra challenge points start a discussion about a YRCA book or complete one of the activities on the Kids Read! website. Click on the links below!

Summer Reading :)
Jul 12, 2008   Posted by: jwilson
Ahhhhhh... summer reading my favourite! I just got back from a vacation filled with summer reading at the beach, floating down a river, and outside on the patio (at the next book punks meeting, ask me about how I was attacked by ducklings!). I like reading outside in the summer way more than I like reading inside in the winter. The air is fresh, the sun is hot and the bugs are yummy snacks! Just kidding, I don't really eat the bugs ;)
I read 6 books on my vacation including a series called "Vampire Beach" by Alex Duval. I finished the first four titles in the series. I also read "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" by Jeff Kinney.
I really liked all the books I read on vacation, I can't wait for the next "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books to come out. According to www.amazon.ca "Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book" is coming out on October 15, 2008 and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw" is being released on January 17, 2009. It seems like a long wait, but I'm sure we'll all keep busy finding other good books to read!
My goal is to read 20 books this summer, 6 done, 14 more to go!
So now that I've told you about my summer reading what have you read so far this summer? How many books can you read this summer? Do you think you can beat my goal of 20?!

Today's Challenge
May 24, 2008   Posted by: jwilson
Can you meet the challenge for glory?? Today's challenge is......
1) To participate in this blog. What are you reading? What is the best/worst book you have ever read? Is there a book you love that was also made into a movie? Answer any of these question or think of your own topic to comment on in the exclusive Book Punks blog!
2)Pick up a book that you would normally never read and read the first two chapters. Bring the book to the next meeting (June 14) and tell me about the book and you will earn up to 5 challenge points.
